THE YOUNG BAKUBA
Fresh from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC),
The Young Bakuba is the hottest sound to hit the
markets this season. Originally founded by Director
Wankebulua Domingos, and established in 1993 in
Namibia , the band has overcome wars, immigration and
hardship to bring its audience their latest hit latest
album, Sacrifice.
This titillating album has already been starred in the
movie “Lord of War” starring Nicolas Cage. The
Americans fell in love with their sound and their
tracks are to be used as background music for the
movie Lord of War.
It was in March of 1995 back in Angola , where the
band was almost no more! Due to the ongoing war the
band had a serious battle to survive. It was at this
critical point that the founder ventured further South
to seek potential in the South African market. This
proved to be a difficult escape from the war torn
Congo , but one by one the band members eventually
arrived on South African soil, leaving behind their
heritage and their relatives. This band has been
together for eight years, have persevered through the
test of time, and this reflects in the wealth and
richness of their sounds and messages in their music.
In South Africa , the band has established a brilliant
reputation for themselves , having shared the stage
with many big names in the music industry. These
include the likes of Jimmi Dludlu and Hugh Masekela,
to name but a few. The Congolese sound has carried
throughout the years, and with some influence from
their experiences in South Africa , the outcome is
phenomenal.
The band has managed to attract massive support and
attention in Cape Town . Their Cameroonian Makossa
music has infiltrated into Southern Africa and other
African countries over time. Tourists from all over
have appreciated their style of music as well as their
presence on the stage. This is indeed “ a very
talented band who use vocals, drums, guitars and konga
instruments to produce their entertaining music .”
This band, a band that is made entirely of refugees
has made a name for themselves despite their status
and their constant battle with xenophobia and
prejudice in South Africa .
The band has over the years performed at various
venues in and around Cape Town . Their weekly
performance occurs at the home of African cuisine,
Marcos African Place . They have recently completed
recording a music video to promote there soon to be
released album.
Working under new management, their manager Mohamed
Fall – the first black owner of a production studio in
the Western Cape – has assisted the band reach the
heights they are currently at, and they are aiming for
much higher so watch this space!
