Artists Genre: Dance

Artists Genre: Dance

Stuart Bridges resides in the UK 14 miles from liverpool in a small town called skelmersdale has been writing music for nearly 15 yrs, he started at a young age playing keyboards and writing and recording his own music using analogue track recorders, he self taught bass, guitar and drums and spent his time recording rock, funk, jazz, ambient music. He played in several bands and played the local festivals, playing bass guitar and was well known as one of the best bassists . Stuart then switched the bass for synths samplers and drum machines and quit his other bands and began working in a trio to develop an ambient electronica band, which was very successful and popular, in the local area. Covering most genres of dance, he shut himself away to develop his skills and producing and remixing. In 2002 he re-mixed a few tracks for Washington’s award winning electronica outfit Arthur Loves Plastic under the name the Underdog and three of his remixes were accepted for their remix albums. In late 2003 he sent a demo of his work to the legendary KULT Records in New York City.
And that'’s where it all began!

Q&A
What is your musical background?

my musical background started with playing keyboards/piano at 12 years old, then at 15 I self taught myself bass guitar, I saved all my cash and bought a multitrack recorder and began writing pieces of music and recreating favorite tracks in my own particular way, at 16 I was in my first band and at 18 I was in my second band and I started to gig around the local area, I jumped from band to band and at one point I was in 3 bands at once I then changed from playing bass to keyboards/drum machines/sampler in a unique original electronic 3 piece band bordering on the feel of dance music, in which we created very original tracks and were very successful in and around our local area, when I left that band I started to write dance tracks alone.

What are your influences? (Favored artists/dj/s etc)

my favorite artists I'd say would have to be apex twin, kraftwerk, dave clark, miss kitten and the hacker, lady tron, nin, chemical brothers, underworld, fat boy slim, the prodigy, new order, radiohead, pink floyd

Why did you switch to dance music?

I switched to dance music because when I first heard dance music, it pushed the boundaries of music to point of heavy experimental and psychedelia, it used sounds of every form and it leaves the doors wide open to more, which appealed to me a lot, I find I can be more experimental writing music and because I've tried most genres of music I found that dance music was what I felt fitted best to me and was the most enjoyable to write, I was always more of an instrumentalist than a songwriter and instrumentals are more acceptable in dance music, plus the whole electronic feel sound appealed to me the most.

Why do you produce dance music?

I produce dance music because music is everything to me, its what I do best and its what I enjoy doing the most, its my life and writing music is my thing, its what I’ve been doing every single day for a very long time, it stretches my mind and I’ve put all my effort and thought into it, if one person says to me they love the track, its worth the time and effort working it just for that, there’s nothing better than the buzz you get when your writing a track and its really working, nodding your head away to it at 3am going 'yeah! yeah!'

Where do you wish to go from here?

I want to develop my own particular genre, my sound, I've got the elements in my head and I know how I want it to sound, its just the sounds I want to hear, its what I like, not trying to fit into fads or fashions, I want it to be timeless, classic, original stuff, not how anybody else wants it to sound, but me and hopefully that sound will appeal to others and stand the test of time.
I'm also very hungry to do remixes, I like to turn a track on its head and really transform it.

What is your favorite peace of gear and why

My favorite piece of gear has to be the vocoder I’ve always been fascinated in the sounds it makes from a very early age, it was so ahead of its time when it was developed and to me its timeless, I love the sounds it makes, I tend to overuse it but, its what I like to hear and it is just an amazing piece of equipment that you can be very experimental with and I spend a lot of time just messing around with it, trying to get the best out of it.
