Michael Lawrence is known and respected as a leader in
Sydney’s lively hospitality industry. For those not
in the know, Lawrence is currently the Business
Development Manager for The Eastern Hotel, the new
hybrid venue in Bondi Junction.
In the late 90's, Lawrence emerged as the notorious
Host of legendary late-night Soho nightspot, Mondo.
During this time he was also responsible for promoting
and producing themed event nights at the Notting Hill
Arts Club and The Leisure Lounge in London’s inner
west.
Returning to Australia after an extended stay in
London, Lawrence landed in Sydney bursting with energy
and ready to rule the roost in the Water Bar at the W
Hotel - winning bar of the year two years running.
Not content with this accolade, Lawrence was also
named as one of Sydney’s Hot 100 in Elle Magazine's
2001 style file. In what can only be described as a
logical progression within the fields of fashion and
entertainment, Lawrence’s drive and passion is now all
things musical. Those that know him well are aware
that over the last few years, this passion has
resulted in a growing repertoire of work.
He was head hunted and moved on to Industrie - South
of France, the City based Bar, Club & Restaurant.
Lawrence's can do attitude and vibrant personality has
once again set new standards in Sydney's bar culture
and the patrons aren't the only ones who've noticed -
a recent issue of Bars & Clubs Magazine stated
“Lawrence immediately brought credibility to
Industrie.”
In December 2004 Lawrence performed his debut single
‘Young Boys R My Weakness’ for a select group of
friends and industry insiders. He says, “The show was
an opportunity to showcase my talents as well as do
what I love most in the world, perform”. This is good
news for fans, as they would remember his previous
shows in London for their “twisted elegance” and
innovative concepts. Lawrence's taste for the
theatrical and enigmatic stage presence exudes
decadence and expressionism with catchy lyrics,
intertwined with 80’s rhythms that reflect both the
breadth of his musical roots and the broadness of his
appeal.
Other career highlights include extra work in
Madonna’s “Ray of Light” video and the Spice Girls
film, “Spiceworld”. Always comfortable in front of a
camera, Lawrence proved he was up to the task behind
the lens when he conceived and directed the video for
his own song “Fun is usually Messy” in 2001. He has
played muse to many a photographer expanding on his
best work of art, himself, as well as strutting the
catwalk for profile designers for most of the late
90’s.
Michael Lawrence is a sassy, sensual, in your face
type of guy and compels you to join him on his
journey, as music is, he says, his vehicle “for taking
people places where they experience new sensations and
open up there minds”. Check out Michael Lawrence
