Lyter
Label: Kult Records
Artists Genre: Dance
While working in a shoe store on Melrose in Los
Angeles, Lyter moonlighted in songwriting
collaborations as a lyricist. Within the first two
weeks of his new demo songs to pitch, Jody Watley
walked into the store. Lyter sold her two pairs of
shoes and two songs. From that point on the store
became a magnet for musical connections as Lyter
garnered six major releases in one year, all through
the store. Signing a publishing deal with Sony, Lyter
moved to New York City and continued through the 90s,
establishing himself as a name songwriter, with dozens
of his songs recorded and released internationally by
name artists such as Donna Summer, Oleta Adams, and
CeCe Penistion, selling millions of records
internationally, and earning him a Grammy nomination
in 94 with soul/gospel singer/legend, Tremaine
Hawkins.
In the late 90s, Lyter began writing and producing his
own material. It was a personal journey centered
around issues in his own personal life. Keeping his
pop sensibility, Lyter infused his lyric and melody
into a more progressive electronic sound and earned
himself two record deals. Currently, Lyter is into
filmmaking.
How did you get into music?
I was as a contract actor on ‘General
Hospital’ and was constantly writing poetry.
My poetry would always get attention from friends and
listeners. I left the show and had an
interest to apply my poetry in lyrical form
so I picked up a cd and figured out a basic meter
(verse-chorus-verse-chorus). I
started then writing lyrics. I met an r&b writer. He
helped turn my lyrics into three songs. I was
working at a shoe store and Jody Watley
walked in and from that encounter, heard my songs
and recorded two of them. Afterwards, through
this shoe store as well, I got two cuts on
CeCe Peniston’s “ Finally” Album. This led to
a publishing deal with Sony Music, which
brought me to NYC.
how did you find your sound? My sound as a
lyricist was really dictated by my
collaborations. Most of my cuts were in an
R&B/Pop/Dance catagory. I had a publishing
deal with Sony music which brought me to
NYC. There came a point where I felt I
needed to go out on a limb and be more exporitory, so
I purchased a microphone, a keyoard, and a
computer, and taught myself some music
theory and piano. I decided I needed to
personalize my lyrics because I felt like i
had something to say. And ‘dysfunctional’ was born.
as well as my desire to write for myself. I
can write R&B lyrics in my sleep, but to
write for myself I couldn’t throw away lines.
It puts me in a position where I have to be honest
with all the deep intricasies
which make me me. Its a challenge that is intimate and
terribly personal for me, but its
harvest, its reward, is priceless. If I didn’t
have something to say, I would never have put
myself in front of a microphone.
If just one person listens to a song of mine and can
identify with some lyric that expresses
a thought, a feeling, or a moment or a passing
in their own life, my own reward is
magnified and justified. and so I take
another step foward in this journey- to unveil truth
with a good beat.
Who is your influence?
My sound as an artist changed from that as a
lyricist because I was the musical
influence as well. I’ve always had an ecclectic
taste in music and I tend to have different
styles and sounds that periodically
dominate my home sound system. From George
Michael, to Dead Can Dance. From
Massive Attack to Depeche Mode. Good grooves,
progressive sounds, and an
atmospheric mood, I most definitely gravitate to.
How did you get started?
“Dysfunctional’ came out of a need to grow creatively
matched with a need to express
intimately. It was the first song I wrote and
performed myself. It was I who would stand or fall.
There were no crutches. And this
coincided with a point in my life where I was ready to
evolve in body, mind, and spirit. Its a personal
journey which i am fortunate enough to have my words
and music be my therapy and my own evolution.
