Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling is the undisputed King
of The Dirty Joke. In the world of comedy, there is
probably no one funnier than "The Joke Man."
Most people know Jackie as a long-time fixture on The
Howard Stern Show, where as head writer and sidekick,
his quick wit and infectious laugh often stole the
show. His unique approach to comedy is a rapid fire
barrage of insults, one liners and actual jokes,
rather than the boring, "concept" approach of most
modern comics. Think of him as a filthy Henny
Youngman, minus the violin.
And when it comes to political incorrectness, Martling
is an equal opportunity offender. No one is spared.
His act moves at such a fast pace, it's hard to catch
your breath from one joke to the next. One reviewer
wrote, "The first time I heard his classic "Sgt.
Pecker" CD, I laughed so hard that I literally had to
keep hitting the pause on my remote so I could breathe
between jokes."
Jackie's career has spanned 30 years, countless albums
and videos and books and television shows and
independent films. He was born and raised on Long
Island, NY, earning a degree in mechanical engineering
from Michigan State University in 1971. He initially
pursued a career in rock & roll with his college band
The Pillowcayse, and after returning to New York in
1973, he formed a two-man group, The Off Hour Rockers,
with his old high school band mate Chris Bates.
However, Martling always harbored a love for dirty
jokes, and from his earliest years he was famed among
his friends for a seemingly inexhaustible supply.
So, after the band dissolved in 1978, he began telling
his dirty jokes on stage, after an eye-opening night
at New York City's Catch a Rising Star when he jumped
on stage during Open Mike and brought down the house
with one of his old classic jokes.
He continued polishing his craft in small clubs around
the tri-state area, where he had a major hand in
launching the comedy boom of the 1980's as he produced
small shows that eventually led to the formation of
comedy clubs.
In 1979 Martling issued his debut self-produced Off
Hour Rockers Records LP, "What Did You Expect?," and
started his still-running dirty joke line and
promotional tool, "Use Your Finger! (516) 922-WINE!"
In 1980 Jackie released a follow-up LP, "Goin'
Ape!"
In 1981, singer/songwriter/actress Nancy Sirianni
joined forces with Jackie and they moved into high
gear, producing and booking comedy clubs, promoting
Jackie in every way they had access to, and released
1981's "Normal People Are People You Don't Know That
Well."
In 1982 they sent all three records to the then
relatively unknown New York radio personality Howard
Stern, who after hearing the records invited Jackie to
sit in on his radio show on WNBC-AM. By mid-1986, he
was a full-time member and head writer of Stern's
show, where he remained until March of 2001.
