Artists Genre: Alternative
Basilica formed in late 2002 bringing together
songwriter/producer Paul Kirkpatrick and vocalist
Adelle Kirk. Paul had previously recorded under the
Basilica name and Adelle was well known as a solo act
on the London gigging circuit under her own name and
previously as part of the groups Kirk and Kushty. The
music is a quirky mix of rock, pop and electronica and
doesn’t fit neatly into any genre or pigeonhole.
Early demos were encouraging and the duo spent the
first half of 2003 writing songs for their debut album
“Sins of the Flesh”.
“The twelve songs on the album explore many of the
reasons often given as to why a person turns into a
killer. Is it genetic, or triggered by an event in
childhood? Is it jealousy, religious paranoia, unable
to forgive after a broken relationship, or is it
merely a primeval urge that is born into everyone but
controlled and suppressed by most of the populous.
Obviously the subject matter doesn’t lend itself to
readily to mainstream music so the songs are crafted
lyrically to be ambiguous, and the music to reflect
the mood of the lyrics. From the heavy guitar laden
electronica of “Gospel of Truth”, where she turns her
back on God and religion, to the soft acoustic melee
that is “Autoerotic”, where she must experience the
ultimate high to curb her sexual fantasies, the album
twists and turns to the climatic “Crushed”, where she
tries to explain the reasons behind her crimes.”
Basilica commissioned Matt Vickerstaff from
Darkwaveart to produce the imagery that features
throughout the album artwork and is tied in very
closely to the lyrical content. The artwork also
features heavily in the live set Basilica will be
playing this year to support the album.
Overall, this album is a brave and creditable
undertaking: I mean it took Marillion umpteen albums
before unleashing their own concept psycho thriller,
'Brave'. 'Sins Of The Flesh' is worthy of your own
indulgence.
