Courage and self-possession were Azadus’ salvation in
the relation of the dramatic anticlimax he experienced
on the 2nd June 2005.
Azadus, a popular hip-hop musician, was on his way
home after a very brilliant experimental performance
of his next album. A scintillating delivery that stood
the test of all spectating critics, earning their
praise and acclaim as a potential monumental success.
Naturally still basking in the ecstasy of these
favourable criticisms, he drove spiritedly back home
in his blue BMW -5 series, in company of his friend,
Kadeem, seated beside him in the front seat.
Some kilometres into his trip, the heavens opened, so
he was forced to park by the roadside to allow the
rain to subside before continuing. Suddenly, however,
he noticed a jeep drive past him and pull up in front
of his. Immediately, two young men alighted and lashed
towards his vehicle. They tried frantically to force
the driver’s door open - simultaneously,
indiscriminately fired gunshots assailed the vehicle,
obviously directed at Azadus and his companion, to
browbeat them into opening the door - and ,of course,
to make them give up the vehicle. By some strange
quirk of fate, Azadus and his companion managed to
dodge the shots and neither was killed, nor were they
compelled to comply with their threats. But Azadus was
shot in the wrist and in the right thigh (and the
windscreen of his car was damaged): but impelled by
what was apparently a survival instinct, he took the
initiative to re- start his vehicle and started
heading away from the fateful spot - top speed! Blood
so gushing out from his body and his stamina falling
off, that he felt he might soon pass out.
Not until after some kilometres into this
indeterminate trip did he notice he was not being
pursued by the robbers. He drove himself straight to a
hospital to seek urgent attention. There hospitalised
(perhaps along with Kadeem, who possibly sustained
relatively minor injuries), he recounted the
miraculous episode, among the host of sympathisers and
well-wishers who thanked the Lord for his wondrous
delivery from the hold of death.
