ABOUT AFRO-SOUL:
The new millennium saw the beginnings of a musical
force to be reckoned with – Afro- Soul!
This dynamic group was formed in 2000 and comprises 8
musicians from various areas around the Western Cape,
including Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Belhar and the
Boland Towns of Worcester and Montagu.
The individuals were brought together by their passion
for music and singing and many of them started singing
at an early age, in school and church choirs.
Nasuis Mgada, founder and leader of the band, is no
newcomer to the world of music. His passion for music
has led to him filling many successful roles such as
Musical Director of Fezeka High School Choir from
1990-1996, Best Music Conductor in 1992 and 1994,
President of the Western Cape Music Association for
High Schools from 1990-1999, Music Director of
Simamele Choir during 2003 and Board Member of the
Stars FPR Africa (An organisation promoting youth
development and young voices in South Africa.)
Sammy De Jager joined Nasius in the group in 2000 as
bassist and songwriter and shares Nasius’s love of
music. He soon became player/manager for the group
having previous experience in a similar role. Sammy
teaches various instruments including guitar, bass,
piano and drums.
The year 2003 brought an important addition to the
group in Divi Dodla. A born singer, he started
performing in public at the age of 13 in a group
called the Glory Singers Community Choir. Soon
thereafter he soon became Zwelethemba Community
Choir’s tenor soloist. In 1990 Divi met up with
Nasius, who taught him to play the guitar. No stranger
to the recording studio and musical directing, Divi
has used his talents on many musical projects and he
is now Afro- Soul’s songwriter, lead vocalist and is
the bands musical co-director.
Jacques Canstable started playing the guitar at the
age of 4, but switched to drums at age 11, joining
Afro-Soul in early 2005. He, like the other band
members has much experience in the music industry,
having being involved in many projects and performing
with the likes of Hotep Galeta, Gito Baloi, Robbie
Jenson, Jimmy Dludlu, Rene Mclean, Alvin and Errol
Dyers and Judith Sephuma. With a Preparatory
Certificate in Music, from the University of Cape
Town’s College of Music, he went onto pursue a
Bachelors degree in Music, but due to financial
constraints he had to stop studying. That did not stop
him from doing what he loved most, with this project
in tow Jacques has a bright musical future ahead of
him.
This band would not be complete without the 4
vocalists: Nontobeko Pasiya, Nolitha Dlwathi, Nokhanyo
Ntshona and Ayanda Nqumashe. As it is said, “Birds of
a feather… “ These four ladies bring unbelievable
talent and energy to the band with successful musical
careers of their own and accomplishments that include
university musical and opera studies, performances in
various stage productions, champions in Soprano Solo
Arias, participation in the Shell Road to Fame Talent
search and performances in various promotions and
corporate events.
What more can be said about a band that together make
world class spiritual and socially uplifting music,
except that it needs to be recorded! With 15 original
songs but no financial backing, a recording seemed an
impossible dream. Luck was at hand though, it was late
2005 that they met Mohamed Fall of Vibrations
Recording Studio, who was very impressed with the
bands musical ability and enthusiasm and agreed to
fund and record an album for them.
The musical style of the group is a beautiful
combination of African indigenous Mbaqanga, Afro-Jazz
fusion and Soul and this is where the name Afro- Soul
originates.
